Using job losses - brought about by savage BBC cuts - for a cheap publicity stunt is a new low for Northcliffe. As one of the 2.5 million unemployed mentioned by the NUJ's GS, I agree that playing with people's potential loss of livelihood is humiliating and contemptuous. Perhaps it's the sort of attitude one could expect from profit-driven Northcliffe ... but we shouldn't accept it. It's the sort of attitude that fails to take in the stark, miserable reality of unemployment and, ultimately, ridicules the unemployed and all workers facing job losses.

What jaw- dropping hypocrisy of this NUJ journalist from the Evening Post to suggest that this biased, narrow - minded newspaper is in any way representative of the broad spectrum of political and social opininion with in Bristol or the UK. We all know and expect the reporting and analysis of events in the Evening Post is at the right wing reactionary level of the Daily Mail, of which it is a part. The Evening Post is not part of a "free press". It is funded and controlled by interests that would never allow a broader and more truthful analysis of events, such as the recent riots, to be published.

A real journalist investigates the truth and sees all sides of the argument. The real story can be found at http://bristol.indymedia.org/article/705459 .

If you want to be a real journalist, leave the Evening Post and start writing the truth. It won't make you rich, but at least you'll have your integrity in tact.

From Paul Breeden, chair, Bristol NUJ:
I don't work for the Evening Post, but I think its journalists give a far more balanced view of events than the hate-filled article on Bristol Indymedia to which you refer.

What you call "the real story" on Indymedia is a one-sided rant that boasts about criminal damage. You can't possibly claim that it explores "all sides of the argument".

It's also anonymous, which means the authors can't be challenged.

It's not the fault of the Post journalists that the paper is owned by the group which also owns the Daily Mail. The two papers are quite different, as any open-minded reader can see.

Local journalists aren't highly paid; like everyone else, they can't choose their bosses. And they work hard to report a balanced view of their communities.

If it wasn't for journalists, how would most people know about the recent disturbances, or the real grievances that some communities have?

Since this article was first written, ALCS have changed the wording on their website with respect to the income from their collection service. They have now removed the phrase "repeat use via the internet". ALCS say that this referred to a pilot licencing scheme for schools run by the CLA who are looking to offer their licensed sectors enhanced rights to copy limited portions from works appearing on designated websites. The schools sector is the first to pilot these additional rights; you can find more details here: http://www.cla.co.uk/licences/licences_available/schools/

ALCS say that the phrase 'repeat use via the internet' could imply a far wider re-use scheme than the current reality, and also say that the CLA schools website pilot falls within the more generic 'digital copying' sector.

There is no general collective licence for repeat use via the internet. NUJ members should licence their work to websites on an individual one-to-one basis with publishers, in the same way that they licence their work for use in print. The NUJ can provide advice on copyright and licencing.

Ridiculous. Poor Maureen, how terrible. I hope she can make it for next year!
Wishing all at Tolpuddle a fantastic weekend of sun, music, fraternal cheer and celebration at this unique festival. It's in the Guardian this year....

Well done and thanks to all those at the BBC who went on strike today, and to those who picketed the BBC Bristol studios. The strike has been solid in Bristol and elsewhere.

Also the Bristol & District Anti Cuts Alliance sends support from to the BBC staff on strike.

Thank you, for everything.
Without Christina and the NUJ's support we couldn't achieved such fantastic amounts of awareness. I feel reassured that something good will eventually come out of this situation, and hopefully no other student will be waylaid on their way home.
Your help meant so very much.

Can I just say THANK YOU for everything you (Christina Zaba) have done to help raise awareness over James' disapperance. You have been incredibly supportive at a time when a lot of us did not know which way to turn. I personally will never forget your kindness. James was, as you know, a very close friend of mine but we can now find closure. You have helped in more ways than anyone could imagine. Just having your words of guidance has helped me so much. I hope that from this river safety in Bath is looked into, nightclubs responsibilities in allowing people to get drunk then forgetting them is looked into and journalists' responsibilities in helping, supporting and publishing stories that really matter to the public, are looked into and I hope to see you at the memorial service early next week, along with anyone who feels they would like to offer their thoughts. Thank you Christina, you go above and beyond what is asked of you and for that I will forever remember you.

Kindest regards
Shaun Holley
